Martin was the husband of Isabella Devis, and father of Ellin Isabelle, Mary Frances and Margaret Elenora Tupper.
Educated at Christ Church, Oxford, he was a friend of British Prime Minister Gladstone.
Prevented by a stammer from entering the ministry, he made his career as a writer instead. In 1881, he lived in Penge, Surrey, and was listed as an author and barrister (not in practice).
