Stewart moved to Alabama with his parents when he was 10 years old, and to Texas when he was 16. Being the eldest son of a large family of little means, he had little education except the public schools. His principal music teachers were T. W. Dennington, Anthony J. Showalter, Rufus H. Cornelius, and John D. Patton. He taught many successful singing schools, and of 1904, lived in Midlothian, Texas.
