Smith was educated at Lin­coln Col­lege, Ox­ford (BA 1855, MA 1857). He served as Vicar of Ha­lam, Nott­ing­ham­shire (1861–84); Ed­ing­ley-cum-Hal­am, Not­tin­gham­shire (1884); and Minor Canon of South­well (1863). He was a friend and collaborator of Her­bert Irons.
