Benjiman was the son of Warren H. Sims and Martha Jane South, and husband of Frances Matilda Shipp.
He was a singing teacher, composer, and publisher. He directed singing schools, usually lasting 10–20 days in the summer, and led singings
as well.
Sims formed a Gospel music publishing company with Homer Morris and with F. N. Brown of Boaz, Alabama, and put out a number of song books.
Sims was superintendent of the Martling Methodist Sunday School, was active in the Epworth League, and served on the county jury commission.
