Biography

John was the son of John Cod­man (1755–1803) and Mar­ga­ret Rus­sell, and hus­band of Ma­ry Wheel­wright (mar­ried 1813).

He was edu­cat­ed at An­do­ver Aca­de­my (now Phill­ips Aca­de­my An­do­ver) and Har­vard Col­lege (now Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty), 1798–1802.

In 1803, he be­gan stu­dy­ing theo­lo­gy un­der Hen­ry Ware. In 1808, he was or­dained as first min­is­ter of the Se­cond Church in Dor­ches­ter, Mas­sa­chu­setts.
