Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6
Words: Julia H. Johnston, in Bible Study Songs, by Bertha F. Vella & Daniel B. Towner (Boston, Massachusetts & Chicago, Illinois: Pilgrim Press, 1899), page 113. To be sung after receiving [Sunday School] certificates of promotion by those promoted.
Music: Napa N. T. De Norlawn, 1899 (🔊 pdf nwc).
If you know De Norlawn’s full name, or where to get a good photo of him (head & shoulders, at least 200×300 pixels), or a better one of Johnston,
All hail the glad and welcome day
Which ends the happy year.
The story of the Sabbaths past
We meet with joy to hear.
In heav’nly mansions by and by,
When breaks the golden morn,
In crowns of life the stars will shine,
Their beauty to adorn.
And here below, the record shows
These bright and shining seals;
Each star that clusters ’round the name,
The faithful life reveals.
The passing weeks have found us still
Where precious truths are learned;
To Sunday School and God’s house
Our willing feet have turned.
The golden texts, of priceless worth,
Are hidden in the heart;
And daily readings of the Word
Reveal the better part.
With grateful hearts we lift to God
Our songs of love and praise,
For pastor, teachers, lessons, truths,
And joys that crown the days.
