David was the son of Jonathan Humphreys Wood and Wilhelmina Hunson Jones. He married twice, to Rachel E. Laird (1856), and Alice M. Burdette (1898).
He trained in Philadelphia at the Institute for the Blind, and was an instructor there from 1853.
From 1864, he was the organist at St. Stephen’s Church in Philadelphia, becoming a noted player, teacher, and composer. He was known as Professor Wood
among his associates and students.
