Biography

Grace was the daugh­ter of Quak­er min­is­ter Da­vid Brain­ard Up­de­graff and Eli­za Jane Clark Mitch­ell, and wife of Re­formed Church min­is­ter John Tall­madge Ber­gen (mar­ried 1906, Ma­di­son, Wis­con­sin). She went by her mid­dle name to dis­ting­uish her­self from her mo­ther.

A sing­er, pi­ano play­er and com­pos­er, she col­la­bo­rat­ed with Kel­so Car­ter in the 1890’s.

After her death, her daugh­ter and hus­band set up a scho­lar­ship in her me­mo­ry at Lake For­est Col­lege, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois.
