Francis was the only son of Joseph William Thrupp; nephew of hymn writer Dorothy Ann Thrupp and sculptor Frederick Thrupp; cousin of Vice-Admiral Arthur Thomas Thrupp; and husband of Elizabeth Bligh Glennie, fourth daughter of cleric John David Glennie (married 1853).
He was educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and was vicar of Barrington, near Cambridge.
