A farmer’s son, Sloan studied at the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Erlangen, and graduated from Edinburgh (MA 1859).
He served as collegiate minister of the Free Church, Dalkeith (1864); minister of the South Free Church, Aberdeen (1868); collegiate minister of Anderston Free Church, Glasgow (1878); and as of 1890 was minister of the Grange Free Church in Edinburgh.
He contributed several translations from the German to J. H. Wilson’s 1865 Service of Praise.
