A na­tive of Ar­gen­tina, Mar­tín­ez was raised a Ro­man Ca­tho­lic, but con­vert­ed to evan­gel­i­cal Christ­i­an­i­ty in his youth. In 1948, he was or­dained as a min­is­ter in the Dis­ci­ples of Christ de­nom­in­ation, and served churches in Ar­gen­ti­na and Par­a­guay.
