Biography

Walter was the son of Tho­mas Hate­ley.

He was edu­cat­ed at the High School in Edin­burgh. At age 18, he went to the Leip­zig Con­ser­va­tor­i­um and stu­died un­der Plai­dy, Mo­scheles, Rein­e­cke, Haup­tman, Rich­ter and Drys­chock (1861–64).

Upon re­turn­ing to Ed­in­burgh, he be­gan teach­ing, in­struct­ing in pi­ano and sing­ing from 1870 un­til his death.

He al­so served as choir mas­ter at the Free High Church (1867–71) and Free St. George’s (1885–98).
