Died: March 22, 1867, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Thomas was the father of Walter Hately.
He was an important musical influence on the Scottish Free Church in the years after the 1843 Disruption. He appears in the portrait of the Disruption meeting that year.
He taught thousands to sing in parts and lectured widely on the history of psalmody.
In addition to secular music, Hately is said have composed over 40 psalm tunes.
