Biography

John was the son of Ti­mo­thy Dwight (Ju­li­an, p. 1560).

He gra­du­at­ed from Har­vard (1832) and the Cam­bridge Theo­lo­gic­al Col­lege. He be­came pas­tor of the Uni­ta­ri­an church in North­amp­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, in 1840, then helped found the Brook Farm Com­mu­ni­ty.

He re­turned to Bos­ton in 1848, and be­gan de­vot­ing him­self to li­ter­ary work. He ed­it­ed Dwight’s Jour­nal of Music, 1852–81.
