Biography

Son of a teach­er, Char­ter­is at­tend­ed Ed­in­burgh Uni­ver­si­ty (MA 1852, DD 1888, LLD 1898).

He served as Pro­fess­or of Bib­li­cal Cri­ti­cism in Ed­in­burgh (1868–95), and Mod­er­at­or of the Church of Scot­land in 1892.

He was in­stru­ment­al in es­tab­lish­ing the Church of Scot­land’s Life and Work Com­mittee in 1869, found­ed Life and Work ma­ga­zine in 1879, and was chap­lain to Queen Vic­to­ria and King Ed­ward VII.
