John was the son of Sam­u­el Brunk and Su­san­nah Hart­man, and husband of Ma­ry Kath­ryn Mar­tin.

A member of the Men­non­ite denomination, he attended the New Eng­land Conservatory of Music in Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, and taught music at the West Central Academy, Mt. Clin­ton, Vir­gin­ia, and Bridge­wa­ter College, Bridge­wa­ter, Vir­gin­ia. He also headed the School of Music at Go­shen College, Go­shen, Indiana. His works in­clude:
