Bruen is re­mem­bered pr­ima­ri­ly as a; com­pos­er. As of 1862, he was or­gan­ist of the South Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts.

He is not Bap­tist min­is­ter Oba­di­ah Bru­en Brown (1779–1852), who served as chap­lain of the Unit­ed States Sen­ate and House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives, though per­haps he was named af­ter him.
