Biography

Antoniano at­tend­ed the Uni­ver­si­ty of Fer­ra­ra (Doc­tor of Laws, 1556) and be­came a pro­fess­or of class­ic­al li­te­ra­ture there. In 1563, he be­came pro­fess­or of belles-lettres at Sa­pi­en­za Uni­ver­si­ty.

Three years lat­er, he gave up his seat there and be­gan stu­dy­ing theo­lo­gy un­der Phil­ip Ne­ri.

He was or­dained a Ca­tho­lic priest in 1568. He be­came Sec­re­ta­ry of Pa­pal Briefs in 1593, and car­di­nal in 1599.
