Ziegler started his career by working at his father’s silk manufacturing plant in Boston, Massachusetts. He had little formal musical training, but for many years was the Sunday School superintendent at Highland Church in Roxbury, where he accompanied the children on the piano. He was also treasurer of the Congregationalist Board of Ministerial Aid, and helped Charles Noyes edit the 1904 Pilgrim Hymnal, to which he contributed several tunes.
