Zelley attended Pennington Seminary, Pennington, New Jersey and Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, where he earned his PhD and divinity degree. Ordained a Methodist minister, he worked in the New Jersey Conference as a statistical secretary and treasurer. He was also a trustee of Pennington Seminary, and promoter of the camp meeting movement. He retired in 1929. He wrote over 1,500 poems, hymns, and Gospel songs.
