Sam Young

April 25, 1926, Hamilton, Ohio.

Carlton was the son of J. Otis Young and Mary Leibrook.

He attended the Cincinnati, Ohio, College-Conservatory of Music (BME), Boston University School of Theology (STB), and Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio (DMus 1969). He also studied at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and in Vienna, and Prague, Czech Republic.

He served on the faculties and directed graduate studies in church music at the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, and Scarritt College (now Scarritt Bennett Center), Nashville, Tennessee, and was emeritus professor of church music at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

He also served as choral director and lecturer in music at Graz University, Austria (1969–72), and directed the United Methodist Youth Chorale (1980–90) in concert tours of England, Wales, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. His works include:
