Son of Da­vid and Mar­garet Mir­ray­lies Young, And­rew grad­u­at­ed from the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh. He was head mas­ter of Nid­drey Street School, Ed­in­burgh (1830-40), then taught Eng­lish at Ma­dras Coll­ege, St. An­drews. He married twice, in 1844 to Ma­ria Mi­vart (died at age 26) and in 1851 to Chris­tina Al­lan, to whom a daugh­ter, Cath­er­ine, was born in 1852.

Young re­tired from St. An­drews in 1853 and lived in Ed­in­burgh, where he was for some time the su­per­in­tend­ent of the Green­side Par­ish Sab­bath School. His works include:
