Andrew was the son of David Young and Margaret Mirraylies. He married twice: to Maria Mivart (1844) to Christiantina Allan (1851).
He graduated from the University of Edinburgh. He was head master of Niddrey Street School, Edinburgh (1830–40), then taught English at Madras College, St. Andrews.
Young retired from St. Andrews in 1853 and lived in Edinburgh, where he was for some time superintendent of the Greenside Parish Sabbath School.
