Wortman graduated from Amherst College (AB 1857) and the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Jersey (1860). He pastored in Brooklyn, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Schenectady, New York; Fort Plain, New York; and for many years at the Reformed Church in Saugerties, New York. He also served as secretary of ministerial relief and president of the General Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church (1901). His works include:
