Earl was the son of Ephraim G. Wolslagel and Ida L. Royer, and husband of Phyllis Woodall. A 1909 graduate of the Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, he described himself as a traveling organizer of evangelist choirs, rehearsing local choirs for revival meetings. Based in Asheville, North Carolina (as of 1916), he focused his efforts in the area from South Carolina to New Mexico.
