Wilkes studied at the Royal Academy of Music (1842–46), then played the organ at Monk­land church, near Le­o­min­ster (1860); St. Da­vid’s, Mer­thyr Tyd­fil; and Llan­daff Ca­thed­ral (1861–65). He also contributed to the first edition of Hymns An­cient and Mo­dern.
