Whittemore was educated at St. Bees and Queens’ College, Cambridge University. He received a Doctor of Divinity degree at Lambeth in 1875.
He was ordained a deacon in Chester in 1845, and a priest also in 1845. He served as curate of St. Barnabas, Manchester (1845–46); curate of Richmond, Surrey (1846–47); curate of St. Stephen’s, Coleman Street, London (1847–49); curate of West Hackney (1849–51); rector of St. James, Aldgate, London (1851–73); and rector of St. Katharine Cree with St. James, Aldgate (1873–94).
