Whittemore was educated at St. Bees and Queens’ College, Cambridge University. He was ordained a deacon in Chester in 1845, and a priest also in 1845. He served as Curate of St. Barnabas, Manchester (1845–46); Curate of Richmond, Surrey (1846–47); Curate of St. Stephen’s, Coleman Street, London (1847–49); Curate of West Hackney (1849–51); Rector at St. James, Aldgate, London (1851–73); and Rector of St. Katharine Cree with St. James, Aldgate (1873–94). He received a Doctor of Divinity degree at Lambeth, 1875.

For while Whittemore edited a periodical called Sunshine. His other works include:
