Son of Palmer Esker Wheeler and Lena Bandy Wheeler, Wheeler attended grade school at the Freed-Hardeman College public school in Henderson, Tennessee, where his father was a music instructor. He graduated from high school in Dallas, Texas, attended Abilene Christian College (BS in music, 1950) and Texas Tech College in Lubbock, Texas (master’s degree in music). After the death of his wife Beth, he married Joyce Preston.

Wheeler’s last known residence was in Desoto, Texas. His works include:
