Henry was the son of Henry Davan & Sarah Wetton of Hayward’s Heath, Sussex.
He began his musical career as a chorister at St. Mary’s Church, Stoke Newington. He later served as organist at All Saints’ Church, Stoke Newington (1877–84); Christ Church, Woburn Square (1884–86); St. Gabriel’s Church, Pimlico (1886–89 & 1890–93).
He was also sub-organist at Wells Cathedral (1890); assistant organist to Frederick Bridge at Westminster Abbey (1881–96); organist and choirmaster, Finchley Parish Church (1892–93); organist and chorus master, Queen’s Hall Choral Society (1893–94 season); organist and choirmaster, St. Paul’s, Finchley (1895–96); and organist at Alexandra Palace (1901).
He conducted the choir of the People’s Palace (1902–03); played the organ and directed the choir at the Foundling Hospital, London; and headed the Music Department at Northampton Institute, Clerkenwell.
