Wernecke at­tend­ed Mil­wau­kee State Teach­ers Col­lege, Miss­ion House (now Lake­land), South­ern Bap­tist Sem­in­ary, Hope Sem­in­ary, and Prince­ton Seminary. He taught Re­li­gious Edu­ca­tion at Cen­tral The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­ary and at Eden The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary, Web­ster Groves, Mis­sou­ri, af­ter the two schools merged. His works in­clude:
