Watson studied music at a Catholic convent, then began playing the organ at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cathedral in Charlottetown. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh for a short while, but returned to his first love, music. He had varied additional interests, though, including painting and botany (he discovered a species of violet which was named after him). Also, together with Lucy Maude Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, he wrote The Island Hymn (i.e., Prince Edward Island).
