Watson stu­died mu­sic at a Ca­tho­lic con­vent, then be­gan play­ing the or­gan at St. Pe­ter’s Epis­co­pal Ca­thed­ral in Char­lotte­town. He stu­died med­i­cine at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Edin­burgh for a short while, but re­turned to his first love, mu­sic. He had varied ad­di­tion­al in­ter­ests, though, in­clud­ing painting and bo­ta­ny (he dis­co­vered a spe­cies of vi­o­let which was named af­ter him). Al­so, to­ge­ther with Lucy Maude Mont­gom­ery, au­thor of Anne of Green Gables, he wrote The Is­land Hymn (i.e., Prince Ed­ward Is­land).
