In the se­cu­lar world, Wat­kin­son is per­haps best re­mem­bered for his 1861 re­quest to Unit­ed States Trea­su­ry Sec­re­ta­ry Sal­mon P. Chase to put a re­li­gious mot­to on Am­er­ican coins. This led to the fa­mous phrase In God We Trust.
