Though still in Nottinghamshire as of 1891, Alfred emigrated to America as a child. He graduated from Northwestern Un­i­ver­si­ty, Evanston, Illinois, and was widely known as the composer of the comic opera The Sultan of Sulu. In 1911, he was choirmaster and organist at the Church of Our Saviour, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois. He was still in Chicago as of 1930.
