April 1840, Burma.

June 23, 1887, Rangoon, Burma.

Son of Justus and Calista Holman Vinton, missionaries to the Karen people of Burma, Brainerd was sent to Hamilton, New York, in 1854 to continue his studies. In 1861, he completed the course at Madison University (now Colgate University) and married Julia A. Haswell, eldest daughter of Reverend Haswell of the Burmese Mission in Moulmein (now Mawlamyine, Myanmar); Brainerd and Julia had been playmates in the mission compound in Moulmein. When Brainerd toured the outlying villages with his ailing mother later in life, the disciples rejoiced at seeing the son of his father. He continued his parents’ missionary work until his death.
