Justus was the son of Justus Vinton and Calista Holman, missionaries to the Karen people of Burma.

He was sent to Hamilton, New York, in 1854 to continue his studies. In 1861, he completed the course at Madison University (now Colgate University).

He then married Julia A. Haswell, eldest daughter of Reverend Haswell of the Burmese Mission in Moulmein (now Mawlamyine, Myanmar). Justus and Julia had been playmates in the mission compound in Moulmein.

When Brainerd toured the outlying villages with his ailing mother later in life, the disciples rejoiced at seeing the son of his father. He continued his parents’ missionary work until his death.
