Son of Ame Wessels Vennema and Elisabeth Vander Haar, Vennema attended Hope College, Holland, Michigan (graduated 1879), and New Brunswick Theological Seminary (graduated 1882). After marrying Henrietta Le Febre, they went to New Paltz, New York, where he began his career as a pastor. He served a number of churches in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Port Jervis, New York; and Passaic, New Jersey. He joined the Council of Hope College in 1905, and in 1911, was elected president of the college; he was inaugurated in 1913 and served until 1918.
