Vansant came to Christ at age 12, and was called to preach at age 15. He attended the New Jersey State Model School and Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey, and entered the Methodist New Jersey Conference in 1884. He held appointments at Englishtown, New Jersey (1884–86); Cranbury, New Jersey (1887 & 1888); Moorestown, New Jersey (1889–92); was a supernumerary in 1893; New Egypt, New Jersey (1894); Collingswood, New Jersey (1895, 1896; Sea Bright, New Jersey (1897–1900); Merchantville, New Jersey (1904, 1905); and Central Church, Trenton, New Jersey (1904, 1905). In 1894, he married Lottie G. Johnson in New York City.
