Vandersloot was the grandson of a German Reformed Church pastor (who was also a hymn writer), and son of a doctor. His family moved to Clinton County when he was a child, and in 1889, he began working at a music publisher in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Within a decade, he had founded the Vandersloot Music Company, which he ran until selling the company in 1930. He led the choir at the Pine Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Williamsport for 28 years (James Black was one of the choir members). Vandersloot’s works include:
