Biography

Ray was the son of Lo­ren­zo Up­son, Jr., and Ad­eline A Shig­ley. He mar­ried twice: to Or­pha E Rowe (1899) and Chris­teen La­cher (Sep­tem­ber 1951).

He stu­died at Bone­brake Se­mi­na­ry, Trot­wood, Ohio (now the Unit­ed Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry), and was or­dained in 1908.

He served church­es in Day­ton, Ohio; Ply­mouth, In­di­an Vil­lage, Twelve Mile, and Plea­sant Lake, In­di­ana. In World War I, he was with the Young Men’s Chris­tian As­so­ci­ation as mu­sic di­rect­or at Camp Sher­man, Chil­li­co­the, Ohio.

From 1935–38, he was a Ru­ral Ev­an­gel­ist for the St. Jo­seph Con­fer­ence of the Ev­an­ge­li­cal Unit­ed Breth­ren Church. He al­so sang in a male quar­tet at se­ven ge­ner­al con­fer­enc­es.
