Samuel was the son of Edward Francis Tuckerman and Sophia May, and husband of Mary Olivia Edwards Perry. He attended Chauncy Hall School in Boston, and studied music under Charles Zeuner in Boston. In 1840 he became organist and choir master at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church there. He studied cathedral music in England for four years, returning to Boston in 1853. He went to England again in 1856, this time staying until 1864, as well as spending several years in Switzerland. In 1864, he became organist at Trinity Church, New York City. His works include:
