Son of George Troutbeck of Dacre, Cumberland, John was educated at Rugby and University College at Oxford University (BA 1856, MA 1858, DD 1883), and was ordained in 1855. He served as Precentor of Manchester Cathedral, Chaplain and Priest in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, and Secretary to th New Testament Revision Company (1870-81). He translated a number of German, French, and Italian opera and oratorio texts, including ones from Bach. His works include:
