Son of George Troutbeck of Dacre, Cumberland, John was educated at Rugby and University College, Oxford (BA 1856, MA 1858, DD 1883), and was ordained in 1855. He served as Precentor of Manchester Ca­thed­ral, Chaplain and Priest in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, and Secretary to the New Testament Revision Company (1870–81). He translated a number of German, French, and Italian opera and oratorio texts, including ones from Bach. His works include:
