Troger was educated at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (BA cum laude, 1967); Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, New York (BD 1970); Dickinson College (STD 1993); and Virginia Theological Seminary (DD). He was ordained in both the Presbyterian and Episcopal denominations.
