Tickle was ap­­pren­ticed to a drap­er in Car­lisle for six years, start­ing at age 14. He was bap­tized in 1838, and moved to Li­ver­pool the next year to join his fa­ther in bus­i­ness. In 1843, Tick­le was one of the found­ers of the first Church of Christ in Li­ver­pool. He held a num­ber of lead­er­ship po­sitions, in­clud­ing chair of the Lan­ca­shire Evan­gel­ist Com­mit­tee for six years, the Gen­er­al Evan­gel­ist Com­mit­tee (1861-88), and chair of se­ven An­nu­al Meet­ings. He ed­it­ed the Christ­ian Ad­vo­cate (1879-88), and helped re­vise the Church­es of Christ hymn­al in 1888.
