Thorne was a chor­ist­er at St. George’s, Wind­sor un­der George El­vey. At age 12, he be­came as­sist­ant or­gan­ist at Hen­ley-on-Thames Par­ish Church, and as­sist­ant or­gan­ist at Chi­ches­ter Ca­thed­ral in 1863. He then played the or­gan at St. Patrick, Bright­on; St. Pe­ter, Ons­low Gar­dens, South Ken­sing­ton; St. Mi­chael, Corn­hill; St. Anne, So­ho; and St. George’s Cha­pel, Wind­sor Cast­le, un­til 1882. The Arch­bi­shop of Can­ter­bu­ry con­ferred his MusD de­gree in 1913. His works in­clude:
