During the American civil war, Thompson served in Maine’s 17th Infantry Regiment, rising from second lieutenant to captain. Although his service record indicates he was a pastor upon entering the army, he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. Later, he moved to the Providence Conference (later renamed the New England Southern Conference, and retired in 1886. Moving to Keyser, West Virginia, he edited The Mountain Echo newspaper. He later moved to Charleston, West Virginia, and also served as secretary to the Board of Agriculture. His final move was to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1905, where he was pastor of the First Avenue Methodist Church.
