During the Amer­i­can ci­vil war, Thomp­son served in Maine’s 17th In­fan­try Re­gi­ment, ris­ing from se­cond lieu­ten­ant to cap­tain. Al­though his ser­vice re­cord in­di­cates he was a pas­tor up­on en­ter­ing the ar­my, he joined the Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Maine Con­fer­ence in 1866. Lat­er, he moved to the Pro­vi­dence Con­fer­ence (lat­er re­named the New Eng­land South­ern Con­fer­ence, and re­tired in 1886. Mov­ing to Key­ser, West Vir­gin­ia, he ed­it­ed The Mount­ain Echo news­pa­per. He lat­er moved to Charles­ton, West Vir­gin­ia, and al­so served as sec­re­ta­ry to the Board of Ag­ri­cul­ture. His fin­al move was to St. Pe­ters­burg, Flor­i­da, in 1905, where he was pas­tor of the First Av­e­nue Meth­od­ist Church.
