Richard was the son of John Thain and Isa­bel­la Hep­burn. He mar­ried twice, to Han­nah Ab­bott (1869), and Em­ma Jane Jen­ness (1881).

He lived in Oak Park, Il­li­nois for an un­known pe­ri­od.
