Taylor graduated from the University of Lewisburg (now Bucknell University) (1854) and Rochester Theological Seminary (now the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School) (1856). He held pastorates in Terre Haute, Indiana (1857-60); Cincinnati, Ohio (1860-64); Chicago, Illinois (1864-70); New Orleans, Louisiana (1870-75); Providence, Rhode Island (1875-81); New York City (1881-82); Newark, New Jersey (dates unknown); and Buffalo, New York (1885-87).

Taylor edited the Baptist Sunday School Quarterly, and was expository editor of the Baptist Teacher.
