One of the early American psalmodists, Swan was of Scottish descent. He began to teach mu­sic at age seventeen. In 1801, while living in Sheffield, Mass­a­chu­setts, he published The New Eng­land Harmony. Af­ter publishing his book, he moved to Vermont, then to Northfield, Mass­a­chu­setts.
