Biography

Stoughton is re­mem­bered as a com­pos­er, ar­rang­er, and or­gan­ist. He wrote or­gan piec­es, light op­er­as, re­li­gious and se­cu­lar can­ta­tas, and po­pu­lar mu­sic.

As of 1919, he was work­ing as a bank tell­er, de­vot­ing all his spare time to com­po­si­tion.

In the 1920s, he worked with danc­ers Ruth St. Den­is and Ted Shawn, and wrote two bal­lets for them.

At the time of his death, he was as­so­ci­at­ed the C. C. Birch­ard mu­sic pub­lish­ers.
