John was the husband of Ann Stock­ton.

Converted at a Me­tho­dist camp meeting in Pauls­bo­ro, New Jer­sey, he was ordained in 1832, and served in the New Jer­sey Conference of the Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal Church. He was known as an active evangelist.
